Vande Bharat to Kerala: How High-Speed Rail is Changing Travel

Kerala has stepped into a new era of railway travel with the arrival of Vande Bharat Express, India’s premium semi-high-speed train. Designed with cutting-edge technology and passenger comfort in mind, this train is not just a faster alternative—it’s a complete transformation in how people experience train journeys across the state.

From Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram, and now with an expanded service to Mangaluru, let’s explore how Vande Bharat is reshaping travel in Kerala and why it’s making waves among passengers and railway enthusiasts alike.

What Makes Vande Bharat Express Special?

Launched under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, Vande Bharat Express is India’s first indigenous semi-high-speed train, capable of reaching up to 160 km/h. Unlike traditional trains, it doesn’t require a separate locomotive, thanks to its self-propelled engine system.

But it’s not just about speed. Vande Bharat brings with it a host of passenger-friendly features:

  • Reclining and ergonomic seating

  • Panoramic windows for scenic viewing

  • Touchless bio-vacuum toilets

  • GPS-based real-time info screens

  • Wi-Fi-enabled infotainment system

  • Modern lighting, silent air conditioning, and smooth acceleration

Together, these features deliver a travel experience that rivals short-haul air travel—at a fraction of the cost.

Vande Bharat’s Journey in Kerala:

1. Kasaragod–Thiruvananthapuram (First Service)

Kerala’s first Vande Bharat Express began its journey from Kasaragod, the northernmost district, to Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital. Covering over 580 km in approximately 8 hours, it dramatically cut down travel time and improved convenience for daily travelers, professionals, and tourists alike.

2. Thiruvananthapuram–Mangaluru (Second Service)

The second Vande Bharat train, launched in 2024, connects Thiruvananthapuram to Mangaluru, expanding Kerala’s rail link to Karnataka. Initially launched with 8 coaches, it was upgraded to a 20-coach configuration in February 2025, following overwhelming demand.

Timings:

  • Mangaluru Departure: 6:25 AM

  • Arrival at Thiruvananthapuram: 3:05 PM

  • Return from Thiruvananthapuram: 4:05 PM

  • Arrival back in Mangaluru: 12:40 AM (next day)

This upgrade marks a major step in meeting Kerala’s growing commuter needs without compromising comfort.

Station Stops: Prioritizing Speed Over Quantity

Both Kerala’s Vande Bharat trains follow a limited-stop model, halting only at key urban stations to maintain speed. Some of the regular stops include:

  • Kannur

  • Kozhikode

  • Shoranur

  • Thrissur

  • Ernakulam

  • Kottayam

  • Kollam

  • Thiruvananthapuram

While this approach reduces overall travel time, it has sparked requests from smaller towns for additional stops—something that might be considered in future expansions.

Speed vs Infrastructure: The Real Challenge

Though capable of 160 km/h, Vande Bharat trains in Kerala currently operate at 80–110 km/h due to track and signal constraints. Kerala’s curvy coastal routes, densely packed towns, and existing infrastructure limit full-speed operation.

Railway authorities are working on track upgradation, advanced signaling systems, and dedicated corridors to eventually unleash the train’s full potential. But for now, even at reduced speeds, the journey remains significantly faster and smoother than older express trains.

How Much Does It Cost?

Compared to conventional express trains, Vande Bharat fares are slightly higher—but come with upgraded amenities and faster journeys.

Approximate Fares:

  • Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram

    • Chair Car: ₹1500

    • Executive Class: ₹2800 (includes meals)

  • Fares vary depending on distance and demand.

Tickets are available online through IRCTC and at station counters. Dynamic pricing may apply during peak seasons.

Why Kerala Loves Vande Bharat

✅ Time-Saving Convenience

Traveling across the length of Kerala used to be a time-consuming affair. With Vande Bharat, long journeys are now compressed into single-day trips.

✅ Boost to Regional Tourism

Popular destinations like Kochi, Kozhikode, and Thiruvananthapuram are now more accessible to both domestic and international tourists, encouraging multi-stop vacations.

✅ Business & Tech Connectivity

For professionals and entrepreneurs, quicker travel means better networking and more productivity, especially between Kerala and tech hubs like Bengaluru and Mangaluru.

✅ Green and Sustainable

With energy-efficient systems and regenerative braking, Vande Bharat is an eco-friendlier alternative to flying or driving long distances.

Excitement with Expectations

The people of Kerala have embraced Vande Bharat with enthusiasm. Passengers commend its cleanliness, punctuality, and premium feel. However, frequent travelers and local leaders have voiced some concerns:

  • Call for more affordable ticket options

  • Inclusion of additional halts for tier-2 towns

  • Better last-mile transit connectivity from Vande Bharat-served stations

Railway officials have acknowledged this feedback and hinted at route expansions, additional services, and possible fare restructuring in the future.

What’s Next for Kerala’s Railways?

With two operational Vande Bharat services and demand on the rise, the next few years may see:

  • New intra-state services connecting central and southern Kerala

  • Dedicated high-speed corridors to enable 160 km/h travel

  • Advanced station facilities to support semi-high-speed infrastructure

  • Potential link extensions to Coimbatore and Bengaluru

If executed right, Vande Bharat could become the backbone of Kerala’s modern rail mobility system.

Final Thoughts

The arrival of Vande Bharat trains has done more than just shorten travel time—it has sparked a cultural shift in how Keralites view railway travel. With its speed, style, and service, Vande Bharat is setting a new benchmark for intercity connectivity.

As more upgrades roll out and rail infrastructure evolves, Kerala’s rail journeys are poised to become even faster, more comfortable, and more accessible. Whether you’re commuting for work or exploring God’s Own Country, Vande Bharat is the train to board for the future of travel.
