Micro greens – Nutritional and Pesticides free, Can be grown from Vegetables seeds without sand
It is easy and everybody can do without sand. The latest flavour trend of Keralites kitchen who are fond of trying out almost all dishes across the globe. Microgreens are edible vegetables, which includes seedlings of edible vegetables, herbs or other plants. Iit is used in the stage of a plant’s growth when its first leaves appear. The Microgreen a concept is the food that provide nutritional rich pesticide free and its cultivation not relates to any chemical pesticides.
Nutritional fact
Fertilizer for microgreens production is very minimum, which can easily be achieved through organic sources. Some of the most common varieties include almost all beans, spinach, oats, mustard, uluva etc. Even cabbage, carrots and beets can be sown and harvested as microgreens.
Microgreens cultivation is very simple they do’nt need much resources, it can be done wven without soild, it will grow in tissue paper, in water etc it require a medium that a seed can sprout. Growing trays with good drainage capacity. Media should preferably be inert one like cocopeat, vermiculite and cocopeat alone or in combination.
Sowing/ Planting
One thing followed before the sowing or spreading of seeds in media is soaking. Seeds of beans, spinach or fenugreek require soaking for getting good germination percentage.
Then seeds are sprinkled over the media in medium density and covered with paper towel/ vermiculite/ cocopeat. Generally, bigger sized of seeds are covered with vermiculite or cocopeat and smaller seeds wth paper towel.
Aftercare
Microgreens have no need of extra care or nursing, after germination withinin one week harvesting can be done. however sufficient moisture should be maintained by spraying water daily. High light requirement of 12-16 hours should preferably be maintained along with low humidity and good air circulation for better growth.
Harvesting
Micro greens can be taken at the appearance of 1st set of leaves. Most of them are ready for harvesting with a week after sowing of seed it cutfrom the surface of the media with out roots. Some microgreens like coriander and fenugreek may regrow and can be cut several times. The media once used to grow the microgreens, can also be used successfully for another crop of microgreens.
