Ash gourd Cultivation Low Care High Yield

This vegetable is also known as winter melon, white gourd, winter gourd, or wax gourd. Ash gourds, crawling vines, can be guided to climb structures or left to spread on the ground.

Overall, ash gourd is a versatile and nutritious vegetable with a wide range of culinary applications.   It also has cultural significance in various parts of the world.

Benefits

In traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda, practitioners believe that ash gourd offers various health benefits. Regular consumption is considered suitable for individuals following a weight-loss diet, especially those with diabetes. With its 96% water content, ash gourd is exceptionally low in fat and carbohydrates. It serves as a rich source of vitamin C, along with flavonoids and carotenes—antioxidants believed to protect the body from cell damage and reduce the risk of conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Additionally, its potential to support kidney function enhances its overall health benefits.

Uses

Ash gourd is widely appreciated for its culinary versatility. As a vegetable, it is commonly utilized in various culinary dishes across different cuisines. Its mild flavor and firm texture make it suitable for a range of preparations, including soups, stews, curries, and stir-fries.

Planting

Successful ash gourd cultivation involves using hybrid seeds to minimize potential damage, along with providing well-drained soil, ample sunlight, and warmth. Employ a seed rate of 0.75-1.0 kg/ha during optimal planting seasons from January to March and September to December. Utilize basin irrigation, dig pits with proper spacing, and propagate seeds in cow dung pots for efficient germination, resulting in transplant-ready seedlings in 10 to 15 days.

Dig pits measuring 30 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm at 2 x 1.5 m spacing, creating basins. Plant five to six seeds in each pit, thinning to two per pit after germination. Provide basin irrigation before seeding and subsequently once a week.

Caring

Apply Azospirillum and Phosphobacteria @ 2 kg/ha and Pseudomonas @ 2.5 kg/ha along with FYM 50 kg and neem cake @ 100 kg before the last plowing. Apply 10 kg FYM and 100 g of 6:12:12 NPK mixture/pit as basal and 10 g N/ pit 30 days after sowing.
