St. Francis Church: Vasco da Gama’s Historic Burial Site in Kochi

St. Francis Church in Kochi is a must-visit for history lovers. Built in 1503, it’s one of the oldest European churches in India. Vasco da Gama, the famous explorer, was buried here in 1524. Though his remains were later moved to Lisbon, his original burial spot is still marked in the church.

The church’s architecture is a charming mix of old-world style, with its tall timber-framed roof and stepped pinnacles. Inside, you’ll find a beautifully carved wooden pulpit and a plain arch that divides the chancel from the nave.

The church holds historical artifacts, including a Dutch baptism and marriage register from the 18th century. A cenotaph on the lawn honors Kochiites who died in World War I.
