Vayal Veedu, the name literally translates as ‘a paddy field house.’ Located on the fringes of Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary in Wayanad, Vayal Veedu is a farmhouse resort in Wayanad that stands true to its name. On that will be etched in my memories forever. When I started off from my Kochi home with my family in tow, I had my expectations running high. And every bit of my expectation was satisfied at Vayal Veedu.
If you ask me what I liked the most at Vayal Veedu, my answer is simple, abundant nature, and the simple joys of life. This resort does not boast of a swimming pool, activity room, gym, or even a television in rooms. But it does boast of one thing, going back to nature. During the two days that we stayed here, there was not a single moment when I felt boredom or exhaustion.
Rooms here overlook vast green paddy fields. Far off, we can see the borders of the jungle. We woke up to the sweet smell of paddy and took a pleasant walk along the edges of the fields. During the day, we tried to catch fish from their pond. Though our fishing expedition was not a big success, we relaxed and enjoyed ourselves under the shades of a thatched shed near the pond.
Vayal Veedu has just four accommodations, so only four families can stay there at a time. My kids were ecstatic about having plenty of space to roam around without bothering about the crowd. The resort has a wonderful kitchen and very polite staff who were always happy to take care of our needs.
We took a jeep ride from the resort, to visit the nearby temples. The old tribal temple surrounded by jungle fascinated me. I learned from the locals that the temple is very ancient, and has no idols. The sight of lighted lamps surrounding the small temple looked divine and splendid in the twilight.
Being a foodie, I have to mention a few words about the food served at Vayal Veedu. It was a delicious mix of traditional and modern cuisine. Most dishes set before us had some ingredients sourced from their organic farms. They have yams, cassava, pepper, and even many varieties of rice growing on their farms.
Vayal Veedu is a resort that I would love to visit again, just to enjoy in the lap of nature.
