St. George's Forane Church: A Historic Gem in Edappally

St. George’s Forane Church, with a rich history spanning 14 centuries, is a significant landmark in Edappally. Originally part of the ancient kingdom of Elangalloor, the area was a small village where the early Christian community, converted by St. Thomas the Apostle, lived a simple life. Today, the church, located at the heart of Edappally near Kochi, remains a vital center of worship and a symbol of enduring heritage. Edappally Pally stands as one of Kerala’s oldest and most important Roman Catholic churches. First constructed in 594 AD as a modest building, it was enlarged in 1080 AD to meet the needs of its expanding congregation. Situated about 10 km from Kochi and near Lulu Mall, this historic church serves as both a revered place of worship and a notable landmark.

Along with its rich history and beautiful architecture, the church features a stunning altar adorned with sculptures of the Virgin Mary and angels. The statue of St. George, spearing a dragon, is a key highlight. The church feast, held in April-May, attracts thousands of devotees, making it one of Kerala’s most important Catholic pilgrim destinations.
