Tourist places in Kottayam

Kottayam is surrounded by the Western Ghats in the east and Vembanad Lake and the paddy fields of  Kuttanad  on the west.  Kottayam boasts an extensive network of rivers and canals, flowing into the vast expanse of the Vembanad Lake.

1.Thirunakkara Mahadeva temple:

Thirunakkara Mahadeva temple is situated in the heart of Kottayam district. This temple holds certain significant artistic and religious importance. It is believed that the idol of Lord Shiva was installed by Saint Parasurama. The temple preserves a number of unique sculptures and murals depicting various Hindu deities.”

2. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary:

Situated at the Vembanad banks, this sanctuary is a haven for birds. Spanning 14 acres, it plays host to local and migratory species hailing from the Himalayas to Siberia.

Walking through the sanctuary provides a forest view and treats you to the melodious chirping of birds.  To have the ultimate bird sanctuary experience, take a Vembanad lake cruise on houseboats or motorboats.

3. Vembanad Lake:

6. Tomb of Saint Alphonsa

Tomb of Alphonsa is a  pilgrim center in Kottayam. St. Alphonsa was the first Indian woman to be canonized as a Saint by the Catholic Church and also the first canonized saint in Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, an Eastern Catholic Church in India.

7. Aiyyanpara:
