Tips before visiting Eravikulam National Park

Eravikulam National Park holds the distinction of being Kerala’s first National Park, nestled in the Idukki district near Munnar. Situated at an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters above sea level, it boasts a breathtaking natural setting.  Eravikulam National Park is a 45-minute drive from the City Centre of Munnar, situated atop the Western Ghats. It is recognized as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The park has another name, Rajamalai Wildlife Sanctuary. It hosts a diverse range of flora and fauna.  The park is famous for the Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered mountain goat species found in South India.  The park offers eco-tourism activities that include visits to various attractions.

These are the helpful tips for your visit to Eravikulam National Park:

Eco-Friendly Zone:

Help maintain the park’s pristine beauty by keeping it free from plastic, litter, and any harm to the wildlife.

Nilgiri Tahr Sighting:

While spotting a Nilgiri Tahr Deer is not guaranteed, patience and quiet observation can increase your chances of an encounter.

Respect the Environment:

Do not disturb the park’s natural environment by picking plants, removing rocks, or altering the landscape.

Ideal Visit Time:

Plan your visit to Eravikulam National Park during the later part of the year. The park may be closed for visitors during the earlier months due to the calving time of the Tahr.

Nearby Tourist Spots:

Explore the surrounding tourist attractions near Eravikulam National Park, including Munnar, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Idukki, Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, and Vagamon.

Photography and Videography Fees:

There is a fee of INR 2,000 for recording videos and INR 25 for taking pictures.

Early Arrival:

Reach the park early in the morning, the park opens at 8 a.m., and crowds tend to gather quickly.

Special Reservations:

If you arrive late and find a substantial crowd, consider heading to the special reservation counter where you can pay an additional INR 50 for reservations, ensuring a smoother entry.
