Life and health, from the time of conception, is subject to challenges to its sustenance. And these challenges come in various ways, not least as toxins that surround us in every imaginable form.
Today more than ever, we are confronted by air that is toxic to breathe (industrial and automobile smoke and hazardous environmental pollutants), water that is toxic to drink (contaminated by chemicals, noxious waste, harmful organisms) and food that is toxic to consume (chemicals and pesticides in vegetables and hormones and antibiotics in meat, processed foods with harmful additives, drugs etc). Toxins are also formed in the body as a by-product of many processes and also produced by various organisms that infect your system.
Why Detox?
Toxins accumulate inside the cells and tissues over the years, and eventually derange the biological and physio-chemical processes in the body leading to diseases from allergies and asthma to stroke and cancer. Toxins also hinder the normal functioning of organs like lungs, brain, kidneys, liver, heart etc and also wreaks your immune system.
What is Panchakarma?
Panchakarma is perhaps the most comprehensive and natural cleansing program available today, to eliminate the toxins and waste products from our body.
The word panchakarma is derived from ‘pancha’ which means five and ‘karma’ which means process. The five processes of panchakarma are
Vamana (emesis), Virechana (purgation), Nasya (nasal purge), Vasti (enema) and Raktamokshana (blood-letting).
How to prepare your body for Panchakarma?
For a panchakarma program to be effective, the toxins that are accumulated in the tissues have to be brought to the channels of elimination at first. This is achieved through a process of Sneha and Swedana. This is called poorva karma or preparatory phase of panchakarma.
A sneha medicine specifically chosen for an individual by an experienced ayurvedic physician is administered in increasing dosage daily [snehapana] until this is absorbed and reaches the tissues and trigger the release of toxins. These toxins are aided to the channels of elimination through the process of Swedana.
These are then expelled through the above five fold cleansing protocol under the supervision of a skilled ayurvedic physician.
When these toxins are expelled and the toxin load is reduced, the bodily processes, revert to normalcy and perform to it’s true potential, thereby leading to healing and a higher quality of health and wellbeing.
Panchakarma is followed by a rejuvenative course [rasayana] to get the body to settle and regain its innate natural rhythm.
Who can do Panchakarma?
Panchakarma is an important part of Ayurvedic system of medicine for treating various health disorders. There are numerous health disorders which can be cured by panchakarma treatment alone including skin diseases, arthritis, metabolic disorders, allergies, asthma and many auto immune diseases. Following a proper panchakarma course, cellular energy levels will increase, immune system will get more efficient and we will feel more active with increased mental clarity and brighter mood.
Benefits of Panchakarma for a Healthy Individual
Panchakarma purifies the body and mind by removing toxins and waste from within. It improves physical, mental and spiritual health. Proper panchakarma promises sound health and vitality and makes one younger, impart a glowing radiance, improves brain functions and enhance the mood.
Side effects or Risks of Panchakarma
Panchakarma is not a spa therapy or just another wellness treatment. It is a highly personalised intense detoxification treatment protocol with potent and profound curative and restorative benefits. It has to be done under the guidance and supervision of an experienced and proficient ayurveda doctor only. The treatment should also be undertaken only at an Ayurvedic hospital with adequate facilities for providing panchakarma treatment. When done under proper supervision in an authentic facility, panchakarma poses no risk at all.
