Onam is the harmonious fusion of Kerala’s rich cultural heritage and the jubilant festivities of a plentiful harvest. A radiant symbol of life’s richness, Onam beautifully signifies the unbreakable bonds between tradition, nature, and the human spirit.
Onam festival beautifully reflects the unity among people, disregarding differences of caste and religion, as everyone shares Onam greetings and well-wishes. Onam festival is celebrated to honor King Mahabali who visits Kerala at the time of Onam.
It is celebrated in the first month of the Malayalam month Chingam. This year, the Onam festival starts from August 20th to 31st of August. The festivities of Onam begin around 10 days before Thiruvonam.
The festivities and celebrations at the festival are:
1. Athapookalam:
Pookalam, the floral decoration, is made on the floor from Atham to Thiruvonam. Drawing Pookalam marks the beginning of the Onam celebrations.
2. Athachamayam:
The Athchamayam procession is a spectacular event that marks the beginning of Onam celebrations.
3. Onasadya:
The grandest traditional feast is the highlight of the Onam celebration. It is associated with the harvest festival of Kerala. Vegetarian dishes with Upperi, Sakara Varatti, and Payasam make the Sadya delicious.
4. Pulikali:
This is mostly practiced in the Thrissur District of Kerala. The performance is based on the theme of tiger hunting. This festival attracts a large number of Tourists.
5. Snake boat races:
Aranmula Vallamkali and Nehru Trophy are held during the Onam season. These races are big events that everyone looks forward to.
6. Tourist Event:
Every year, Onam celebrations are organized in Thiruvananthapuram by the Kerala Tourism Department, under the auspices of the Kerala government. The Kerala Tourism Department graciously extends Onam festivities throughout the state, adorning the tourist spots with celebrations.
All schools, colleges, offices, and other workplaces celebrate Onam with floral carpet competitions and games associated with Onam such as “Vadamvali” and Thiruvathirakali.
In modern times, the Onam season is closely linked to vibrant shopping festivals and delightful festivities. City residents commonly enjoy “Sadya” meals during Onam by conveniently ordering them from local hotels.
