The rainy season in Kerala is ideal for cultivating various vegetables, yielding good results with minimal pest problems. Here are some vegetables and their seeds suitable for this season. Terrace gardening offers reduced pest infestations, better sunlight exposure, and a convenient way to grow food, supporting sustainable living practices.

Amara – Lablab Bean(അമര)

  • Qualities: Amara Lab Lab is a fast-growing legume with high nutritional value, including protein, amino acids, dietary fiber, and vitamins like folate and vitamin K. It also contains minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and iron.
  • Planting: Planting during the rainy season, typically between July and August. This climbing plant can grow up to 5 meters tall. It flowers in November-December and matures by January-February. Use lime and phosphorus fertilizer if the soil pH is below 5.8. It can be grown as both a climbing vine and an upright plant and works well as an intercrop, improving soil fertility and offering diversity in farming practices.
  • Preparing the Ground:-
  1. Cultivate the Soil: Thoroughly till the soil.
  2. Add Lime: Mix lime into the soil and let it rest for a few days.
  3. Enrich the Soil: Incorporate organic fertilizers such as chicken manure, dry cow dung powder, compost, and neem cake.
  4. Create Basins: Dig basins about 30-45 cm deep.

Growing Tomatoes in the Rainy Season

  • Preparing the Ground:-
  1. Cultivate the Soil: Till the soil well.
  2. Add Lime: Mix lime into the soil and let it rest for a few days.
