Ask any Malayali to take you to a nice bar, chances are, they will take you to their favorite toddy shop first. Kallu is a favorite alcoholic beverage of Malayalis and toddy shops (or as we Malayalis like to call them, ‘Kallu Shaaps’) are a common sight in Kerala. From the traditional shanties to modern a/c restaurants, these have always been a part of Malayalis. Unlike bars, kallu like also provide tasty food. What more does a Malayali want? Bitter experiences are not what makes a person cry here but the unbelievable taste of the delicious, spicy food that goes really well with kallu. Be it fish curry made with red, hot chilly or beef fried with a hella pepper, you will love it.
Anyone who comes to Kerala for short or long visits must find a toddy shop and see what we’re talking about. And as we already said, it’s not hard to find one here. No matter where in Kerala you are, you’ll find good toddy shops. And oh, fret not if you’re traveling with family. Most of the toddy shops these days are family restaurants too. It’s two birds with one stone, really. Toddy? Yes! Food? OH YEAH.
You’re probably thinking, “Oh shoot. How do I find a good toddy shop out of the jillion toddy shops in Kerala?” We’ve got your back again. Mullapanthal shaap in Udayamperoor, Thrippunithara. A true love of toddy has definitely visited this amazing place. There are Manthopp and Kadamakkudi bars in Ernakulam too. And man, the toddy and spicy beef and pork beat even the tequila + lemon combo. Don’t believe us? Check them out yourself!
Ernakulam too far for ya? Thrippekulam shaap, Mapranam shaap, Pravinkoodu toddy shop, etc. will answer your prayers. These are really cool and chill kallu shaaps you’ll find in Thrissur. Whereas in Kottayam, the land of Achayansnamd Achayathees, there are a lot of shaaps (no surprise there!) There’s no Kottayam family that doesn’t drink. It’s their main part of the celebration. Do check out Vanarani and Padippura (sounds like the name of a school eh?) kallu shaaps there. The taste of the food there, Oh. My. God.
If you are a meat lover, you must check out a toddy shop. Yes. Must. The food that you get here tastes really good. Most of them are spicy, but not all. And kallu along with these beauties equals food heaven. In most of the toddy shop restaurants that we mentioned earlier, you can get food items such as chicken, beef, pork, duck, prawns, squid, lobster, etc. in different forms and shapes. Since the food is so damn good, you can take your family and make sure that everyone is enjoying it.
Choosing whether or not to take Toddy is completely your choice, but for the sake of the shaapile Ruchi, or the tastes of shaaps, you should try going to a kallu shaap at least one time. Unlike the toddy shops portrayed in old Malayalam movies, most shaaps now has the look of a restaurant and are really clean and hygienic. So, do check out our Shaaps, you can thank us later.
