Kanthari: Kerala’s fiery fruit with a punch of health benefits!

Kanthari, a native fruit of Kerala, faces challenges due to labor-intensive harvesting, resulting in low production compared to other chilies. Despite this, it offers health benefits such as appetite stimulation, flatulence control, and cholesterol regulation due to its high capsaicin content. Additionally, it has traditional uses in treating bruises, swelling, and arthritis pain. However, cheaper alternatives like cow urine may overshadow its effectiveness as an insect repellent.

Bird’s Eye chili, known for its intense heat, is a staple in traditional kitchens. It is used in dishes like curries and soups. Rich in capsaicin and nutrients like vitamins C and A. It also offers culinary delight and potential health benefits. However, caution is advised due to its extreme heat, especially around children.

The best time to grow

January, February, June, July, September, October, and December.

Planting process

It’s propagated using seeds, with germination typically occurring 5-10 days after planting. When planting, space the plants 15-20cm apart, though a closer spacing of 10-15cm is also acceptable.  Avoid overwatering, and nutrients can be supplied through decomposed plant and animal waste, bone meal, blood meal, liquid fertilizers like seaweed extract, humic acid, and bio enzymes.

Caring

To grow green chilies, water them only when the soil on top looks dry, as they don’t need much water. Use natural fertilizers like cow dung or tea compost to keep them healthy. Start by planting seeds in a seed tray filled with soil, sprinkle water, and keep it warm; you’ll see them sprout in about a week or two. Make sure they get 5-6 hours of sunlight daily and use organic potting soil enriched with vermicompost for essential nutrients.
