How to Prepare Garam Masala

Garam masala plays a crucial role in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes by adding depth, warmth, and a complex blend of flavors. It enhances the overall taste of curries, stews, and other dishes, offering a perfect balance of aromatic spices like cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves. Ingredients for Garam Masala, Spices from Mahagrand:

  • Cardamom (8-10 pods): Adds a sweet, floral aroma.
  • Cinnamon (2-3 sticks): Provides warmth and complexity.
  • Cloves (10-12): Contributes a bold, spicy note.
  • Black Pepper (2 tablespoons): Adds a subtle heat.
  • Fennel Seeds (1 tablespoon): Brings a mild sweetness.
  • Star Anise (1-2 pieces): Offers a mild licorice-like flavor.
  • Nutmeg (½ piece): Enhances the blend with a warm, nutty undertone.

Steps to Prepare Garam Masala:

Dry Roast the Spices

  • Heat a heavy-bottomed pan on low to medium flame.
  • Add each spice (except nutmeg) to the pan and dry roast them individually for 1-2 minutes until aromatic. This enhances their flavors.
  • Be careful not to burn the spices—stir constantly to ensure even roasting. Grate or Break Nutmeg
  • Grate or break the nutmeg into smaller pieces for easy blending.

Cool the Spices

  • Once roasted, transfer the spices to a plate and let them cool completely.

Grind into Powder

  • Use a spice grinder or a mortar and pestle to grind the cooled spices into a fine powder. For best results, grind in small batches.

Store in an Airtight Container

  • Transfer the garam masala powder to an airtight container to preserve its freshness and aroma. Store in a cool, dry place.
