Kitchen gardening – Papaya cultivation at home

We have to find time for planting vegetables at home with good spirit.  Then gradually it will become a part of our life style. All members of the house  must participate in farming. Particularly children should participate in the kitchen gardening. Our kitchen gardening helps them to prevent the excessive use of TV or mobile phone and they will become creative.

It provides pleasure as well as an health and can give an opportunity to adopt new methods in agriculture. And we may become model to others and  can give them advice on farming. The kitchen garden cleanses the air around us. Plants take up carbon dioxide instead of oxygen, which is very vital to humans. It keeps us cool and stress-free.

Pappaya Cultivation

Papaya is a fruit tree that can be grown and maintained in the backyard without much care. It is also known as Kapunga, Kapalanga or Omaka. Papaya is cultivated industrially in the tropics around the world. The ideal place for planting papaya is the one where direct sunlight obtains.

Planting and Caring Papaya

Red Lady and Red Ruby are good yielding varieties. Seeds can be used for planting. If the seed is planted, fill the planting mixture with a cover and sow the seeds in it. Put papaya seeds in water for 7 to 8 hours and then they germinate quickly. For the planting mixture, take equal proportions of soil, sand, coconut fibre and cowdung. Seedlings can be transplanted at one and a half months old. Fill the pit with soil, dung powder and neem cake and plant the seedling therein.

Enough drainage should be provided during rainy season. In case of the disease called collar rot, the same  can be prevented by spraying a 1% Bordeaux mixture and pouring it on the bottom. If tender fruits are dropped frequently, spray the Bordeaux mixture to prevent the same.

When the mosaic disease is infected, the leaves will stunt and the fruits  will be shortened and have  wrinkles . And some marks will be appeared on the fruits as though burnt.  Since this is a viral disease, the affected plants should be uprooted and burned to prevent infection. In the early stages of mosaic disease, it is advisable apply the groundnut oil diluted with water. Research shows that certain fatty acids in goundnut oil can help fight off disease-causing pests and slow down virus activity.

‘Mealymoota’ is one of the pests that affect papaya in Kerala. Fish amino is very good for this. Bavaria, a pesticide, is also effective.
