Beans Enrich Soil
Planting
Beans thrive in sunny conditions and require warmth to germinate and grow. Incorporate organic matter such as compost, aged manure, or leaf mold into the soil to improve its structure, fertility, and moisture retention capacity. Work the amendments into the top 6-8 inches of soil using a garden fork or tiller. Ensure proper drainage by loosening compacted soil and creating raised beds or planting rows if necessary. Apply a layer of organic mulch such as straw, shredded leaves, or grass clippings to the soil surface to conserve moisture.
Sow bean seeds directly into the prepared garden bed once the soil has warmed to at least 60°F (15°C), typically in late spring or early summer. Space bush beans 2-4 inches apart in rows spaced 18-24 inches apart. Harvest snap beans when the pods are young, tender, and crisp, typically 50-60 days after planting. Pick beans regularly to encourage continuous production.
