Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

 The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the eastern part of the high ranges of the southern Western Ghats of Kerala at Devikulam taluk of Idukki district.

The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary holds significant importance for several reasons:

Biodiversity conservation

Chinnar Sanctuary is primarily for the preservation of a wide range of wildlife species. Especially, it has a focus on safeguarding endangered and exceptional creatures like the Grizzled Giant Squirrel and the rare Manjampatti White Bison. Other important animals include the Rusty Spotted Cat, Elephants, Tigers, Leopards, and more. There are 28 different types of mammals in the sanctuary, and tigers are occasional visitors from neighboring forests.

Ecosystem Preservation

The sanctuary plays a vital role in preserving the delicate ecosystems of the Western Ghats. It also contributes significantly to the overall ecological balance in the region.

Research and Study

Chinnar provides an ideal environment for researchers and scientists to study and understand various species, their behavior, and their habitats. Furthermore, this research is invaluable for conservation efforts.

Ecotourism and Education

Although the sanctuary offers opportunities for ecotourism, it also serves as an excellent hub for environmental education. Visitors can learn about the rich biodiversity, and accordingly, understand the importance of wildlife conservation. The forest department also conducts river trekking, trekking to the cultural site, nature trail to the watch tower.

Above all, the sanctuary serves as a crucial guardian for these unique and endangered species.
