Cauliflower is one of the winter vegetables. It grows well in cool climate. The white potion of the plant which is called “curd” is used for cooking. Cauliflower curry is a common dish in every home, because it tastes good with rice or chapatti. It is good source of calcium, phosphorus and vitamins.
Now winter vegetables like cabbage and cauliflower are cultivated widely in Kerala. Since it is a cool season crop, the best time for sawing seeds is November. Either we can saw the seeds or we can by quality seedlings from the nursery. Usually seedlings will be transplanted after 20-25 days. So, if we saw seeds by November we can take the advantage of the cold of December and January.
How to Grow Cauliflower
The seeds can be sawn either in paper glasses or in trays. Proper care should be taken while sawing and transplanting. If we are using grow bags place only one seedling in the grow bag. A mixture of coco peat and cow dung powder can be used as soil mix for seeds generation. A well prepared soil is necessary for every crop. Prepare the soil 15-20 days before transplanting seedling. Lime stone powder, cow dung powder, bone meal, neem cake powder should be applied while at the time of soil preparation. Keep the soil moist every time. Neem cake is a good natural fertilizer and helps in pest control. While filling the grow bags put soil below half portion and according to plant development add soil in every 10-15 days. Sprinkle water twice a day after transplanting. However it is a winter crop, like most vegetables it needs full sunlight for better yield.
It is good to spray pseudomonas and fish amino in alternate weeks. We can spray Neem oil –Garlic liquid on it for pest control. At the time of developing heads apply any organic fertilizer. We can use Azolla plus ,a natural and organic potting mix. Usually cauliflower is ready to harvesting about 60-100 days.
