Simple Tips for Okra Cultivation
- Choose well-draining soil with a pH of 6.5-7. Boost soil fertility and texture by incorporating organic matter such as compost or well-decomposed FYM. Use hybrid better quality seeds. Soak okra seeds in a water-fungicide solution for 6 hours to prevent seed-borne diseases and enhance germination. Ensure adequate spacing between okra seeds or seedlings in rows to allow for air circulation and sunlight penetration. Space seeds 12-18 inches apart in rows spaced 3 feet apart.
- Maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during flowering and fruiting stages.
- Apply organic fertilizers as needed, particularly when plants start flowering, to support healthy growth and fruit development.
- Keep okra beds free from weeds to minimize competition for nutrients and moisture. Mulching with organic materials can further enhance growth and suppress weed growth.
- Regularly inspect okra plants for pests like aphids, fruit borers, and leafhoppers. Harvest okra pods when they are young and tender, typically around 3-4 inches long. Harvest every 2-3 days to encourage continuous production.
