How to reach Vagamon

Vagamon known as the ‘Scotland of Asia,’ gained fame in the 1920s with the arrival of tea plantations and Christian missionaries. Vagamon’s lush green grasslands, surrounded by hills, provide a serene escape with stunning views, including the ‘V’ shaped gorge, a popular viewpoint.

Vagamon, known as the “Queen of the Mist,” is truly a charming hill station that is 1,200 meters above sea level in the Idukki district of Kerala. It’s renowned for its stunning waterfalls, tea gardens, meadows, and lush green forests.

Attractions in Vagamon

Elaveezha Poonchira

Despite its name, Vagamon offers panoramic views of Malankara Dam and captivating vistas among three hillocks. Jeep rides through rocky terrain are required, and during monsoons, it becomes a scenic lake, ideal for sunrise and sunset views.

Vagamon Lake:

It is a top tourist attraction in Vagamon, nestled among three verdant hills, offering a slice of paradise in the Vagamon Valley. The scenery is breathtaking, with lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and a carpet of green grass.

Kurisumala Ashram:

Kurisumala Ashram is a renowned monastery of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, built in 1958, and named after the cross-shaped hill where monks lead a monastic life.

Thangalpara:

This sacred place is located at Kolahamedu in Vagamon, a popular pilgrimage site in Idukki.  Its unique rock formation atop Thanga Hill is renowned.  It holds great significance for Muslim pilgrims while also offering panoramic views of Vagamon town, making it a beautiful tourist spot.

Parumthumpara:

Parumthumpara is a small hill near Vagamon, famous for its “Suicide Point” It offers trekking opportunities and a calm, cool atmosphere.

Murugan Mala:

It is a rock temple of Lord Murugan, accessible by trekking and known for its spiritual ambiance.

The Idukki Arch Dam:

It is one of Asia’s tallest arch dams, offering mesmerizing views amid granite hills. Boating in the reservoir is a popular activity, and nearby Cheruthoni Dam provides memorable sunrise and sunset views. The Kulamavu Dam is famous for boating, trekking, and sightseeing.

The best time to visit: Summer (March to June) and winter (October to March)

1. By Air: The closest airport is Kochi International Airport is located 94.5 kilometers away from Vagamon.

2. By Train: Kottayam railway station, 63.9 kilometers away from Vagamon.

3. By Road: The distance from Kottayam to Vagamon is 63.8 kilometers via Ettumanoor – Erattupetta – Poonjar Rd/Ettumanoor – Pala – Poonjar Rd and SH14.
